findings for today

I found a couple of useful information for ports from the sites:

http://www.tech-faq.com/computer-parts.shtml

on tech-faq.com it explains what different types of ports are used for in the motherboard.
It provides a good set of terms for those who don't understand what certain parts are:

Keyboard and Mouse Port - Ports where the keyboard and mouse are plugged into.
USB Ports - where USB's are plugged into.
Serial Port - serial ports are used for plugging in joysticks or other game conrtrollers.
Parallel Port - Where the printer is plugged in.
MIDI - A port where MIDI capable instruments can be plugged into.
Onboard sound -A sound card has already been installed on the motherboard without taking up a PCI slot.
AGP port - where the moniter is plugged into.

http://www.practicalpc.co.uk/computing/what/parts.htm#ports

On practical.pc.co.uk it explains what a port is, giving a simple yet straight-forward description stating:
Ports are the sockets/plugs on the back of the computer used for plugging stuff into the computer such as mouse, keyboard, etc...

It also includes background information about ports:
the Main ports use to be serial and parallel ports used for plugging in the printer and scanner but in time they have come to be replaced as the main by USB. This can be used to connect almost anything to the computer including stuff such as cameras, modems and external hard drives.
